It's unlikely that your receiver can reshape 5.1 signals (typically only 5.1 ones with Atmos/DTSX can do that, although older models that are 7.1+ have some ability as well), so for games, in your situation it's best to set Windows' sound to stereo (otherwise it's sending out blank channels) which will allow your receiver to use Dolby Pro Logic or whatever upsampler it has access to in order to generate surround channels. Just to be accurate, DDL is only the real time encoding which is done for games by specialty hardware, etc., your system as it is can only send pre-packaged DD soundtracks (movies, etc.).

I connected my PC via Optical directly to the receiver and enabled Dolby and DTS 5.1 output in the Sound settings for the Optical output. Upgrading to an AV receiver with HDMI is probably the only real solution.Įven though your receiver is older, if it has Dolby Pro Logic 2 (DPL2) or NEO6 or some sort of upmixer built in to take stereo signals and widen them to 5.1, it's basically doing the same bullshit that Razer Surround is doing but probably much better you might try enabling those modes if they're available and just continue to output stereo from your computer to it. (I'm just pointing that out because some people mistakenly believe that DD/DTS are superior sound codecs and that they're the "native language" of games, even though neither is remotely true.)

Supposedly some people have old dolby digital live (DDL) or DTS connect (those are the actual names of the real time encoders) working by forcing components of old drivers, but unless you really want to stick with Windows XP, your success rate will be pretty low for results that are a bit laggy by modern standards, not to mention inherently lossy.

I'm not exactly sure why you're using your TV to pass things through: you might as well skip that by using your motherboard's/soundcard's optical to connect directly to your receiver.
